§ 14-46. Injured or ill animals.

  • Whenever an animal control officer encounters a stray animal suffering pain, the animal control officer shall take the animal to a veterinarian where the cost of any care or treatment shall be borne by the owner or caretaker. If ownership of the animal cannot be determined, the animal control officer shall impound the animal for five days unless it appears that a longer impoundment will lead to identification of the owner or caretaker. If the owner or caretaker cannot be located, the animal may be euthanized by humane means without notice.
